ABN-Amro chief Mr Jan Kalff warned yesterday that the banking industry could be sidelined as Internet-driven commerce rises to the fore, and urged banks to act quickly to respond.

But the banking industry's leading messaging network, SWIFT, said it was already hustling to preserve a role for banks as Internet-linked byways make it possible for businesses to circumvent them.
