Some insurance companies now provide a 24-hour emergency call-out service for the benefit of policyholders who find themselves in an emergency situation and require the services of a tradesman in a hurry.
The helpline undertakes to locate and secure the services of a plumber, electrician or whichever tradesman is needed, saving the householder the hassle of locating a reliable workman.
But consumers should be aware that the cost of calling out a tradesman will be refunded by the insurance company only in the event that the damage is covered under the terms of the policy.
Ms Caroline Gill, the Insurance Ombudsman, believes that rigorous procedures should be put in place by insurance companies providing such a service so that policyholders availing of it are clear that they may have to meet the costs.
"When a policyholder rings this number in an emergency situation, it should be made very clear to him at the time of the call that the cost of the repairs must be covered by him in the event that the damage is not covered under the terms of his policy," she said.
