European shares fell on Wednesday as worries about rising inflation and the Delta variant of the novel coronavirus hit economically sensitive sectors, even as technology stocks tracked an overnight surge in their U.S. peers.
The pan-European Stoxx 600 was down 0.2 per cent, with banks, energy and mining shares falling between 0.6 per cent and 1.0 per cent.
The European benchmark is on course to post its biggest percentage gain in the first six months of a year since 1998, but the double whammy of high inflation as well as the global spread of the highly contagious Delta variant has recently slowed gains.
If the Stoxx 600 ends Wednesday’s session down 0.4 per cent or more, it will mark its best first-half of a year since only 2019.
Later in the morning, investors will be razor focused on a flash reading of euro zone inflation data for June after May inflation surged past the European Central Bank’s target of “below but close to 2 per cent”.
A Reuters poll found economists expect year-on-year inflation of 1.9 per cent this month.
“An underlying print still well below 2 per cent may add credence to the view that ECB officials are unlikely to start considering withdrawing monetary policy support any time soon, and thereby support European equities,” said Charalambos Pissouros, senior market analyst at JFD Group.
Analysts also warned of higher volatility on Wednesday due to quarter-end portfolio rebalancing.
Europe’s volatility index edged slightly higher to 17.40, having risen consistently since hitting a 16-month low of 15.14 on June 11th.
Germany’s DAX fell 0.2 per cent as data showed the country’s unemployment rate stood at 5.9 per cent in June, as expected.
In company news, Dutch eyewear store operator Grandvision surged 13.8 per cent as Ray-Ban maker EssilorLuxottica said it had decided to go ahead with a planned takeover of the company. EssilorLuxottica's shares were up 1.2 per cent.
Indivior Plc jumped 10.3 per cent after raising its annual revenue and profit forecast, encouraged by strong sales of its opioid addiction treatments in the first half of the year.
Technology stocks rose 0.4 per cent following a record high close for the US Nasdaq in the previous session, and were set to end the second quarter with gains of more than 8 per cent.
Retail, pharmaceutical, food and beverage , and real estate shares were also among the top five gainers in the quarter. – Reuters
