Is Facebook feeding us stale news?

We’re stuck in our own filter bubbles

Journalist Tim Herrara had a suspicion that his Facebook news feed wasn't reflecting the immediacy and volume of updates from his friends. So he ran a little experiment to test his theory and the results were interesting. He spent the best part of a day cataloguing every piece of news in his feed and compared these updates found from visiting his friends' pages. It turns out that most of the news he saw was old and it was a mere fraction of the content actually generated. Facebook might personalise our info streams to show what it thinks we want but it's really just the death of serendipitous discovery as we're stuck in our own filter bubbles.
