What you've found . . .
A reader has been in touch about the price of birth certificates. She needed a copy of her daughter's birth certificate, which she was told would cost 6.98 (and 5.08 for additional copies) over the counter at the General Register Office on Lombard Street in Dublin. But then she was told by Births, Deaths, Marriages (01-8013333), a new private company, that by post the same certificate would cost €32.20: 25 plus 21 per cent VAT and a €1.95 credit-card charge. How can it justify such a price difference?
Births, Deaths, Marriages is a commercial business that received government funding for its set-up. It says it hires people to do the work for those who can't afford the time or inconvenience of doing it themselves. The certificate is delivered within two days. The General Register Office (01-6711968) says it also offers a postal service. Allowing two weeks for delivery - and sending the office a stamped addressed envelope and specific family details - you pay the same as over the counter.
