The title seems appropriate for a musician who, like all great artists, reaches for something timeless. For the past two decades, New York trumpeter Dave Douglas has probed for new directions in improvised music, but always with one hand on the heart of the American jazz tradition. His music is now beginning to sound like a summation of that tradition, and some of the work here could have been written at any time in the past 50 years – except that it wasn't. With a superb quintet that includes saxophonist Jon Irabagon and pianist Matt Mitchell, Douglas is saying something new and personal, but in a way that Miles Davis or Charles Mingus would have understood. And that, one senses, is what he means by time travel.
