Get a head start on spring with a crisp, fruity Reisling

Mid-week tipple: Each week John Wilson picks two wines for you to try at home

Wakefield Estate Clare Valley Riesling 2015

The Australians held a large tasting in Dublin earlier this week, with an impressive range of wines on show. I was pleased to come across one old friend that I hadn’t tasted for some time. Visitors to Australia will have come across these wines under the name family name of Taylor. As there is a Port house of the same name, they are called Wakefield outside of Oz. This is a very toothsome refreshing dry Riesling with plenty of lively crisp green apple and lime fruits. On its own or with fish.

€14.99 from independent off-licences.

Wakefield Estate Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

At one stage Wakefield had the largest single planting of Cabernet Sauvignon in the Southern hemisphere. Those days are long gone, but they still make a very decent full-bodied ripe Cab with plenty of cassis and a sprinkle of spice. Nicely priced and perfect with grilled beef.
