Russian icon at Mealy’s

19th-century Russian icon of the Mother and Child. The silver has “Moscow marks” (€500-€600), at Sheppard’s

The big Dublin auction houses may have shut up shop for a long summer holiday but sales are continuing throughout the rest of the country. Mealy's Fine Art is holding a two-day Summer Fine Art Sale auction on Tuesday and Wednesday in the saleroom outside Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny. Viewing of the 1,200 lots begins tomorrow at noon.

This is a very eclectic sale with a huge range of paintings, porcelain, silver, furniture, African tribal art and taxidermy.

Among the more unusual lots is “a cased, stuffed and mounted grey nurse shark” measuring over 1.5m (€800-€1,200).

Lot 481 is a wonderful 19th-century Russian icon (one of two in the auction) of the Mother and Child. The silver has "Moscow marks" so this could be a bargain at the estimate (€500-€600). A 19th-century rosewood men's vanity case, complete with ivory-handled cut-throat razor, and silver topped bottles and jars bearing the crest of the Montmorency family is €800-€1,200. An elaborate late- Georgian Irish door-lock and key is €1,200-€1,500. A selection of clocks includes an Irish George III bracket clock by Thomas Blundell, Dublin (€3,000-€5,000).
