Photographer's Dublin 16 lodge for €635,000
THE SELLER:David Kenna
What and where
Detached two-bedroom cut-stone granite lodge built in the 1880s on Balinteer Avenue, D16.
Describe the house
Very private and secluded 65sq m (700sq ft) lodge surrounded by old granite walls. It has deep window sills with original-style window shutters and an original exposed natural stone wall with an arch leading to the kitchen. The walled garden is very private.
The house has a lot of history too: it was part of an estate originally owned by Lord Mount Charles (father of Henry) of Slane Castle.
And Padraig Pearse's school, St Enda's, is just down the road - he used the estate as a retreat. I've lived in the house since 1994; it's well maintained, but old, and needs lots of TLC.
Why are you moving?
I'm building a new house on a site next door where I'll live with my seven-year-old daughter Mollie.
What's the best thing about it?
It has a unique appearance and energy and when people visit, they have a very strong feeling of homeliness; it's very cosy and calm.
And the neighbourhood?
It's at the entrance to Hilton Gardens, a cul-de-sac of 28 houses built in the 1990s that thrives on a strong community spirit. Residents young and old get together regularly, to play and chat. And of course it's very near the metropolis of Dundrum -- the Balally Luas stop is 10 minutes' walk away.
Who'd like your home?
A professional person or couple, perhaps considering an apartment but who would like something exclusive -- it's a one-off house. Or it could make a city base for someone living outside Dublin.
