Bangladesh's election chief said yesterday that security forces have arrested "more than 13,000 people and seized both weapons and explosives in an attempt to create a safe atmosphere for February's general election.

"I am satisfied with the drive to seize illegal weapons and miscreants are consequently on the run," Justice A. K. M. Sadeque said, after detailing the arrests of 13,080 people and the seizure of 1,399 weapons, 3,912 bullets and 6,987 explosive devices since December 20th.
