NO ONE can remember a backbench MEP getting such huge coverage as British Liberal Elizabeth Lynne, and at the Euro Parliament this week they looked on in wonder. Lynne flew from London to Strasbourg on Monday with a big Union Jack bag of British beef. She declared it to the French customs who, despite the escalating food war, failed to act, so she proceeded on her merry way to the Parliament where she announced she would cook it for her colleagues.
Unfortunately for Lynne, on her way to the basement kitchen she tripped and fell and was carted off to hospital. Her friends roasted the joint and brought a few slices to her bed.
By this stage her political boss, group leader Pat Cox had named the dish Beef Wellington. The British loved the Waterloo connection. Needless to say there are no French among the Liberals.
