THE number of Irish women who had abortions in England in a three month period last year rose by 4 per cent, according to figures published by the Office of Populations, Censuses and Surveys in London, the Pro Life Campaign said yesterday.
The number of women travelling to Britain for abortions during July, August and September 1995 was 1,168, compared to 1,124 for the same quarter in 1994, a statement said.
The Pro Life Campaign described the increase as "of interest," saying the figures "reflect the first effects of the Government's abortion information legislation".
There was a four per cent decrease in the number of women normally resident in Northern Ireland travelling to England for abortions. There was a 2 per cent decrease in England and Wales, according to the lobby group.
