The crippling effects of international debt on countries in the developing world were highlighted in a street demonstration outside the Central Bank in Dublin yesterday.
The event, organised by AFrI, forms part of the Jubilee 2000 Campaign, which is seeking the cancellation of unpayable debts owed to creditor governments and bodies such as the IMF and the World Bank.
According to AFrI, Africa spends four times as much on paying interest on loans as on health care. For every £1 in aid given by developed countries to the Third World, nearly £4 is returned in debt repayments.
