The winner of the first international limericks competition's £3,000 prize is Mrs Marian Gormley, of Betty stown, Co Louth. She is the mother of the Green Party TD, Mr John Gormley. Her entry read:

In Limerick where once I did stay

I vowed to return one day

There's nothing they lack,

Charm, culture or craic:

From `Ashes' they've come a long way.

Around 1,500 entries were received from 20 countries for the competition, which was organised by Shannon Development and local tourist interests.
