Vatican City - Catholic bishops from the Americas open a month-long synod tomorrow to discuss the challenges facing the church from Manhattan to the slums of Brazil as Christianity nears its third millennium.

Pope John Paul II, who called the synod in 1994, will open the gathering in St Peter's Basilica before the 233 bishops and Vatican officials and 58 experts and observers start work in a modern audience hall on Monday.
