Boyne rugby club, the club of international Shane Horgan, is hoping to be the first club in the country to incorporate a walking and jogging track into its facilities.
The club has applied to Meath County Council for permission to build what it describes as "the best club facilities in Irish rugby" that will be able to host visiting international teams who can use it for training.
Population growth in the Louth/east Meath area means the club needs new facilities on a greenfield site. It has over 700 members and 21 teams, yet now operates out of three inadequate locations across Drogheda.
The seven-hectare site it has identified is near the Mill Road just outside Drogheda to the south of the Boyne, but inside the boundary of Co Meath.
"The Mill Road is strategically placed to take advantage of the young demographic profile that is likely to arise out of recent significant residential development in the area," the club says in its planning application.
Club spokesman John Sheridan confirmed that if planning was granted it would see the construction of four flood-lit pitches, a training area, children's play area, the perimeter jogging track and a three-storey club house.
The club wants the jogging track as "we want to involve people on the fringes of rugby".
"Walking and power-walking are popular, and here is somewhere to do it if, for example, you have just dropped the children off for training. We are family and community-orientated," said Mr Sheridan.
The council is due to decide on the application this month.
