Drivers in Northern Ireland who fail to pay their car tax will run the risk of wheel-clamping after new regulations came into force yesterday. It is understood that road-tax evaders cost the British government £12 million a year in the North.

A spokesman for the Department of the Environment, which is running the scheme, said: "We advise everyone without a valid disc to get one right away. The clamps are on their way."
