A carpenter who downloaded images and videos of children being abused – including one that a detective garda said was "one of the most severe" he had ever seen – will be sentenced next week, writes Elaine Keogh.

Trim Circuit Court yesterday heard that Kevin O’Brien (43), the Boulevard, Grange Rath, Drogheda, admitted possession of child pornography at his home on January 18th, 2007.

His house was searched and a computer seized after gardaí received information from German police on child pornography distribution. The computer contained 800 images and six video files.

Kevin Segrave, defending, said there was no explanation for O’Brien’s behaviour other than “prurient curiosity”.

Judge Donagh McDonagh has adjourned sentencing until Friday.
