Loyalist protesters today attacked police of the RUC, slightly injuring one officer, after the officers moved in to seize home-made bombs in a predominantly Protestant neighbourhood, police said.

The clashes, in the Shankhill Road area of Belfast, left one RUC officer injured in the hand.

"Loyalists attacked police in Belfast today after the RUC seized a number of suspect blast bombs," the RUC said, adding there were no arrests.

A spokesman said a number of suspect devices were found in a bag behind a derelict house at Hopewell Crescent.
