The Democratic Republic of the Congo government ordered the expulsion of a British diplomat yesterday, accusing him and five detained British and US government officials of spying.

The Interior Minister, Mr Gaetan Kakudji, said the diplomat, who was briefly detained on Sunday, had been told to leave the country at once.

The Foreign Office in London, questioned before the expulsion yesterday, rejected suggestions that the detained officials were spying.
