Thumbs up:Tesco has become the first major retailer in the UK to start transporting freight by canal in a move, it says, which will reduce carbon emissions by 80 per cent.
The Tesco barges will carry wine from Liverpool to Manchester along the Manchester Ship Canal, taking 50 lorries off the road weekly and saving 683,000 miles worth of journeys every year. Plans are already in hand to expand the scheme across the UK.
Smacked and sacked
Thumbs down:A customer service manager with Wal-Mart in New York has been sacked after being punched in the face by a shoplifter who she had intercepted and let go outside in the car park (as she was legally bound to do). Apparently the shoplifter ran back into the store and assaulted the staff member, who was dismissed three days later for touching the customer. "I was just defending myself and this store," she told the Times-Heraldnewspaper. "I need this job. I have kids to feed. Now, I don't know if I even want to work in retail anymore."
Go back, Diego
Thumbs down:Mattel is in trouble again after it was forced to recall 12,000 toys in the UK and Ireland due to excessive levels of lead paint. The recall of the Go Diego Go Animal Rescue Boat is Mattel's fourth in the last six months and follows the recall of two million toys in August.
