A deferral of changes to the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act to allow time for public consultation has been sought by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, reports Chris Dooley, Industry and Employment Correspondent.

ICTU general secretary Mr David Begg said the public required more, not less, information about how political decisions were made.

"This is essential if the current trend towards disengagement by voters, especially younger people, with the political process is to be halted and reversed." Congress, said Mr Begg, was supporting the call by the National Newspapers of Ireland for the Government to defer its Freedom of Information Bill until the autumn. This would allow time for public consultation, he said.
