Senators and TDs today began questioning the head of the Health Services Executive (HSE) Professor Brendan Drumm.

Prof Drumm, who has been accused of insensitivity over the issue, is attending a scheduled private meeting chaired by Ceann Comhairle John O'Donoghue.

Minister for Health Mary Harney was warned by a senior doctor in a letter over two years that radiological services at the Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise were being provided "by people who have no expertise in this area".

Consultant surgeon Peter Naughton told the Minister the service was "a shambles" and that "women are having unnecessary surgery because of a total lack of decision-making".

"Nothing has happened to encourage me that things will be different next year or the year after," Mr Naughton wrote.

Ms Harney told the Dáil last night that she had referred the surgeon's concerns to the HSE.

Over 20 women who underwent breast cancer checks at the hospital have had to have second mammograms after it emerged at least women had incorrectly been diagnosed as not having cancer.
