Los Angeles - The Earl of Wessex (Prince Edward) yesterday attacked the way he believes he is treated in Britain, telling an American interviewer: "They hate anyone who succeeds."
The Earl, in Los Angeles to promote his television production company Ardent Productions, told the New York Times he found Hollywood a "breath of fresh air". His comments came in an interview with the paper's Los Angeles correspondent James Sterngold, who spoke to the Earl about his ambitions for breaking into the US market.
"America is where the money is," said the Earl, before going on to talk about his ambitions to produce documentaries, detective shows and historical dramas.
Contrasting the way he has been received in the States with the way he believes he is treated in Britain he said: "They hate anyone who succeeds. There was a much greater openness and willingness to take us for what we are here. Over there there's more baggage, if you understand that expression."
