The seventh annual Schools' Competition in History held in association with The Irish Times is now open to all full-time second-level students in the Republic and Northern Ireland. There are three categories in the competition:

1 Junior category - up to Junior Cert or O Level

2 Transition Year category

3 Senior category - up to Leaving Cert or A Level

Specially commissioned medals will be awarded to the first and second prize-winners in each category. All winners and runners up will also receive book tokens.

Within each category there are two subject areas: European history and local history studies. The junior and senior categories are open to projects by individuals only. The Transition Year category is open to individuals or groups of up to three students. Class projects are not eligible for any category. The projects must represent original work. Entries may be written (preferably typed) in Irish or English and should not exceed 3,000 words.
