A five-storey building collapsed in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka today, killing 11 people and leaving at least five feared trapped.
The building, in the crowded Shakharibazar area of Dhaka, was home to several families and some shops when it collapsed as many of the residents slept.
Residents said about 25 people lived in the building. Eight people, all of them injured, have been rescued from the rubble.
At least 50 troops and firefighters were using shovels to dig through the debris. Cranes and other heavy equipment could not be moved to the site because of the narrow alleys in the area, a rescue worker said.
The dead included four men, five women and two children.
Police said they suspected faulty construction on top of poor foundations may have led to the collapse.
