A gorse fire was extinguished in the Dublin Mountains overnight. The fire broke out close to Lamb Doyle’s pub and was brought under control by Dublin fire brigade in a couple of hours.
There are still a number of fires burning in Clifden, Co Galway, this morning which are being monitored by fire service personnel.
A spokesman for Galway fire brigade said the remaining fires were in areas that are inaccessible but that the situation was not as serious as it was last night.
Fires blazed across Galway, Mayo and Sligo over the weekend, with all parts of Co Galway affected. Fire crews fought outbreaks from Abbey Knockmoy in the north of the county to Gort in the south, Ballinasloe in the east and Clifden in the west.
A prolonged dry spell has left vegetation vulnerable to fire
The Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney reminded land owners and the public on Friday that it is illegal to burn growing vegetation on uncultivated land between March 1st and August 31st . He appealed to people to be vigilant for fire, to report any suspicious activity to the gardaí and to report any uncontrolled or unattended fires to the Fire Service.
