The British government is today due to take another major step towards a single Equality Bill for Northern Ireland.
Northern Ireland Office minister Mr John Spellar is to publish a consultation document on the Bill that aims to harmonise anti-discrimination and equality legislation.
The Bill will tackle all forms of discrimination against people on the basis of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation and disability. It is envisaged the legisaltion will cover inequality and discrimination in employment, goods, facilities and services.
The Bill was originally the brainchild of the Stormont power-sharing executive during devolution.
But since the suspension of the Assembly in October 2002 it has become the responsibility of direct rule ministers from Westminster.
It is envisaged the consultation process will last until this autumn.
