THE DEATH took place yesterday of Vincent Jennings, a former chief executive of the Irish Press Group and former editor of the Sunday Press. Mr Jennings died in St Vincent's Private Hospital following a long illness, at the age of 73.
Mr Jennings began his career as a subeditor with the Evening Press. He later became acting editor of the Sunday Pressand went on to become editor of that paper in 1968 at the age of 31.
He was the youngest editor of a national newspaper in Ireland at the time. He held the position of editor for 18 years.
He was appointed general manager of the Irish Press group in 1986 and later became chief executive. The Irish Press newspaper group ceased publishing three titles – the Irish Press, Evening Pressand Sunday Press– when it closed down in 1995.
He also held the position of chief executive at Irish Press plc, and was a director of that company for a number of years.
For a number of years he was chairman of the Catholic Communications Institute.
Mr Jennings, a native of Dublin, is survived by his wife Mary, his son Ian and daughter Melissa, and his grandchildren Eoghan, Oisín and Pearce.
