Gardaí in Limerick are investigating an explosion at a house in the city yesterday, the second attack of its kind in less than 36 hours.

An explosive device damaged the front of a house in Sunnyside Court, Carew Park, shortly before 1am. Less than 36 hours earlier, on Sunday afternoon, a family with four young children had a narrow escape when a hand-grenade was thrown into the front room of their home at Colbert Avenue in the Janesboro area of the city.

The deadly device completely destroyed the room, but fortunately the family was in the back of the house at the time. In the latest incident, a homemade device exploded after it was placed on a windowsill at the front of the house.

The explosion shattered a hallway window and damaged two vehicles parked in the driveway. No one was injured in the blast, but the house was occupied at the time.

Garda sources indicated last night that both attacks were "more than likely" linked as the target of the latest attack is closely related to Sunday afternoon's target.

"The investigation is ongoing, but both the victim of Sunday's incident and the latest target are related so it's more than likely that both attacks are connected," said one source.

In the latest attack two men described as "tall and thin" were seen running from the scene. It is understood a southside criminal gang, locked in a violent feud, is responsible for both attacks.
