A Dutch bomb squad removed an explosive device found at a British international school in Dutch town of Voorschoten near The Hague today, police said.

The small device was found by teachers at the front of the school's main building. Police evacuated 700 students and dozens of staff to a sports hall on the grounds. Three houses nearby were also evacuated, police said.

"It was some kind of explosive device . . . what kind exactly is not clear", a police spokeswoman said.

It was not known who planted the device. Police said no warning had been issued.
