Reaction: Chemistry: Ms Jacqueline Given, the sister of Irish goalkeeper Shay Given said she was happy with yesterday's higher-level chemistry paper.

The student at St Columbas College, Stranorlar, Lifford, Co Donegal said: "It was a fair paper that covered a lot of the course and you had a good choice of questions."

"The option question was easier than usual and the organic question went better than other years," she added. Other higher level students at the school reacted positively to the paper.

Mr Keith Durning (19), also said that the paper was fair overall. He said the paper covered a lot of the syllabus so the more difficult questions could be avoided. "It was very similar to other years but a bit easier," he said.

Mr Barry Toner, a higher level chemistry student said the quality of the paper was matched by the quality of the teaching.

There were some problems regarding the ordinary-level paper however. Students discovered when they left the exam that question one on the ordinary level paper was almost identical to question two on the honours paper. Mr John Tourish (18), said: "When I read through I realised it was a bit difficult, but the paper in general was all right."
