A farmer was beaten with hammers, tied up and bundled into the boot of a car during a violent robbery in Co Derry, police said today

The man suffered a fractured leg, as well as face and back injuries during the robbery in Aghadowey outside Coleraine yesterday.

He was approached by three men as he came out of a barn close to his house on the Glenkeen Road. He was knocked to the ground and struck on the legs with a hammer before being tied up.

As the robber started to search the premises the man managed to break free, but as he ran to get help two of the gang caught him and repeatedly struck him with the hammer before putting him in the boot of a car parked in the yard.
