Fine Gael sources are playing down a report that the party has earmarked the singer Dana as a possible candidate in Donegal North East at the next general election. A spokesman said yesterday that it was party policy never to comment on any contacts made with an individual on a confidential basis.

Dana (Rosemary Scallon) was an Independent candidate in last year's presidential election and caused a surprise when she polled just under 14 per cent of the vote. At the time she did not rule out pursuing a political career in Ireland.
