London - England and Wales are enjoying their first period of sustained falls in crime rates since the early 1950s, the government's senior criminal statistician, Mr Chris Nuttall, said yesterday. He was announcing details of the two-yearly British Crime Survey for England and Wales.

This showed that offences fell 14 per cent between 1995 and 1997, the first fall since the survey began in 1981.
