A Naval ship is assisting an Irish fishing vessel that got into difficulty off the southwest coast.

Three crew were lifted from the boat by helicopter after it began taking on water. The captain stayed on board to pump out water.

The Celtic Dawn had been taking in water 30km south west of Castletownbere.

The 13-metre vessel alerted the coastguard in Valentia shortly after midday of the trouble on board. The Shannon-based rescue helicopter was scrambled, and the naval vessels LE Ciara and LE Eithne responded to the mayday alert sent out by the coastguard.

The LE Eithne stood down when the Le Ciara reached the scene quickly. The Castletownbere lifeboat was also in attendance. The vessel is being towed into Castletownbere.
