Greens accuse Yes camp of scaremongering

The Green Party today accused pro-Nice campaigners of scaremongering over the economic consequences of a second No vote.

The Green Party today accused pro-Nice campaigners of scaremongering over the economic consequences of a second No vote.

The Party's enterprise, trade and employment spokesperson, Mr Eamon Ryan said: "A Yes or No vote in the Nice referendum will not be the deciding factor in whether we gain or lose Irish jobs".

Mr Ryan said: "Whatever form the expansion of the EU takes it is clear that foreign direct investment is moving to countries such as Hungary and the Czech Republic where wage levels are a fraction of our own, the infrastructure is superior and where corporate tax breaks rates can just as easily be applied".

"The Government's over-reliance on defining Ireland as a low corporate tax haven is not an enlightened long-term economic plan," he said.

Party leader Mr Trevor Sargent said: "Farmers are well aware of the huge contradictions contained in Government assurances about the Nice Treaty and CAP reform.

"If the Government claims CAP payments will continue as before, then where is the extra money going to be found to pay the entitlements of over two million farmers in Poland?" he said.
