San Salvador - In a new blow to Guatemala's fledgling justice system, the public prosecutor who secured the ground-breaking conviction last month of three military officers for the murder of a prominent Roman Catholic bishop and veteran human rights campaigner has been forced to flee the country after receiving repeated death threats.

In his resignation letter, Mr Leopoldo Zeissig said his decision was based on death threats, a lack of security for his family and his superiors' refusal to transfer him after the conclusion of the historic case.
