The cream of the Tory party, including the shadow chancellor, Michael Howard, boarded the Glasgow-to-London express at Preston on Wednesday at the end of the party conference in Blackpool. Howard had been railing about the state of the railways and there was much debate on the Railtrack crisis. The train drew to a halt near Crewe and stayed put. Cows on the line, was the announcement. Much laughter all round.
