CONTINUOUS UNPLANNED closures of the Dublin Port Tunnel are causing major difficulties for commuters, hauliers and businesses, employers' body Ibec says.

Its transport executive Paul Sweetman was commenting yesterday after a nine-hour closure of the tunnel on Wednesday due to a malfunction in its electronic systems. The closure resulted in severe traffic congestion across the north of the city.

Tunnel closures were taking place almost monthly, Mr Sweetman said. "This frequency of closures cannot continue. Once an incident occurs in the tunnel, the responsible authorities must act quickly and effectively to rectify the problem. When the tunnel is repeatedly closed due to systems failures, strong and decisive action is required," he added.

The National Roads Authority and Dublin City Council have said they will take legal proceedings against the tunnel builder.
