A strong earthquake that struck Indonesia's eastern province of Papua has killed at least 23 people and injured over 100.
"According to the latest news in the information centre, 23 people died and the number is still growing," said Muhamad Son Ani, district police chief in the coastal town of Nabire.
He said 62 injured people had been treated and sent home after the earthquake, which measured 6.9 on the Richter scale; 30 were in a military hospital and about 60 in a local hospital,
The local hospital itself had been badly damaged, another official said.
Nabire, with a population of about 26,000, is about seven kilometres from where Indonesian earthquake centre officials placed the quake's epicentre.
Officials said the quake had also damaged some roads in Indonesia's eastern-most province, and Nabire airport is closed due to a crack in the landing strip.
