Iraq has said it will allow United Nations weapons inspectors to return to the country "without condition", the UN Secretary General Mr Kofi Annan has said.

In an announcement a short time ago Mr Annan said he had received a letter from the Iraqi authorities confirming the decision to allow the inspectors to "continue their work".

The letter said Iraq was "ready to start immediate discussions on practical arrangements for the inspectors to return", Mr Annan said.

In the brief statement, Mr Annan said he would transmit the letter to the president of the United Nations Security Council.
