A US soldier was killed by Iraqi gunmen at a checkpoint in the western town of Al-Qaim, near the Syrian border, coalition forces said today.
One of the attackers was killed and another captured after soldiers returned fire, but at least one other assailant managed to escape in their car, prompting a manhunt by US forces in the town overnight, a statement said.
The dead soldier's name was withheld until next-of-kin had been notified.
A total of 29 US service personnel have died in fighting or accidents in Iraq since May 1st, when US President George W. Bush declared the war on Iraq effectively over, according to an AFP toll.
