A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after a woman was hit by a car and killed in Hartstown, north west county Dublin on Sunday.

The collision happened at around 2.40am when two female pedestrians were struck by a car on the on Hartstown Road.

Both were taken to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown where one was pronounced dead. It is the first road death of 2016.

The second woman remains in a serious condition. The occupants of the car were uninjured.

The driver of the car was arrested at the scene and taken to Blanchardstown Garda Station. He was later charged and released to appear before Blanchardstown District Court later this month.

Local traffic diversions are in place as forensic collision investigators examine the scene.
