A 69-year-old Irish man has died after falling 245 metres at a scenic location on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Spanish police have confirmed.

It is thought the accident happened on Tuesday afternoon as the man and his wife were visiting a popular viewing spot at Mirador de los Helechos, in northern Lanzarote, with a group of other tourists.

Police say that while admiring the surrounding countryside, the man, whose name has not yet been released, apparently lost his balance and fell.

His wife was said to be suffering from shock and was comforted by other tourists at the scene. Onlookers described the scene as distressing.
