A JOURNALIST from The Irish Timesand Irish filmmakers yesterday received awards from the European Commission for highlighting poverty and social exclusion.

Irish Timescrime correspondent Conor Lally was the Irish winner in the print category of the European Year Journalist Award 2010. His winning article investigated the treatment of prostitutes and was described by the jury as "shining a light on an issue that is seldom, if ever, written or spoken about".

Bill Hughes and Bernadine Carraher of Mind the Gap films won the audio-visual category for a documentary series on the transformational power of music.

The presentations were made in Dublin at the Irish closing ceremony for the European year of combating poverty and social exclusion.

Both entries will now be sent forward to represent Ireland at the European level of the competition.
