Tehran - Moderates backing President Mohammad Khatami demanded reform of Iran's security services after revelations that secret police death squads were involved in the murders of dissidents.

The reformers, sensing a chance to extend President Khatami's authority to what has historically been the realm of the conservative clerical establishment, also demanded that hardline rivals publicly distance themselves from the killings.
