After three days of counting and recounting votes, the final seat of six in the Galway constituency of the Udaras na Gaeltachta elections had not been filled late last night. Just one vote separated the two candidates, Mr Padraig O Biadha (FF) and Mr Sean Craven.

On Monday some ballot papers were found not to have the official mark and the recount had to be started all over again.

Yesterday, the recount was again held up by the same ballot papers, and a decision was made to scrutinise each of these votes individually to determine whether they were legitimate.

One candidate who stood in the Galway constituency but failed to be elected, Mr Tomas O Curraoin of Republican Sinn Fein, asked for the whole election to be held all over again in the light of the number of votes that did not carry the official mark.
