Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi is understood to have refused food on Tuesday at his cell in Camp Zeist near Utrecht in The Netherlands.

A Scottish Prison Service spokeswoman said she could not comment on individual prisoners. Al Megrahi, who yesterday lodged notice of intent to appeal his conviction, is understood to have begun eating again yesterday.

He has six weeks to lodge the grounds for appeal which, if granted, would be heard before five Scottish judges at Camp Zeist, the former military base where the trial was held.

Once the grounds of appeal are lodged the full documentation will be given to a judge in chambers, who will decide whether to grant leave to appeal.

Legal experts consider it unlikely an appeal would be refused.

Al Megrahi has argued his innocence throughout the nine-month Lockerbie trial at the Scottish Court in Holland.
