A youth (19) was brought before a court today charged with the murder of his mother.
Celyn Eadon from Derrynacrieve, Islandeady, Castlebar, appeared before Judge Mary Devins at a sitting of Swinford District Court. He is charged with the murder of Noreen Kelly Eadon (46) at Derrynacrieve, Islandeady, on Wednesday last, March 9th.
The accused, who is unemployed, was wearing a suit and open necked shirt. He showed no emotion during the brief, five minute, hearing.
Evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given to the court by Det Sgt James Carroll, who is based at Castlebar Garda station. Det Sgt Carroll said he arrested the accused at 9.15pm on Thursday night and at 10.20pm he had charged him. Mr Eadon had made no reply to the charge, witness explained.
Insp Martin Byrne applied to have Mr Eadon remanded in custody to appear at Harristown District Court, Castlerea, on March 18th for the preparation of the book of evidence.
Aidan Crowley, solicitor for Mr Eadon, asked Judge Devins that his client be given immediate psychiatric attention once he was brought to Castlerea.
Asked by the judge if there was any reason for this, Mr. Crowley replied he had known the accused for a number of months and there had been a progressive mental deterioration in him, and that he was in need of immediate medical attention.
Insp Byrne said that shortly after the accused had been arrested, a local GP, Dr Patten, had been brought to Castlebar Garda station to see him. He had then been brought to Mayo General Hospital, where he had been assessed by a doctor in casualty.
On the application of Mr Crowley, legal aid was granted to the accused.
